The manors name was taken from the Gubbins family who were residents there in the 13th Century, though there had been a manor recorded there in 1086. The manor's name had been spelt as 'Gobions' at times, Gobions, a road near the town centre, was named after the manor. The building, later known as 'Manor House' was demolished during the 1940's and stood where Westmayne now passes through Laindon. There is a very detailed history of the manor on the Laindon Archive Site by local historian Ken Porter.
