James Mead was born in Laindon on 20 October 1754 By 1808 he and his wife were living and working on Fairmead Farm in Basildon.
They had seven children between 1784 and 1801 in Basildon.
On 1 June 1808 James and Elizabeth travelled to market in Romford. On their way home their horse was startled and their carriage tipped over. As the horse bolted the carriage ran them both over killing James instantly, whilst Elizabeth clung to life for a few more hours.
On 5 June 1808 they were buried at Holy Cross Church, Basildon.
James and Elizabeth are my 13x Great Grandparents.

I am a descendant of John Mead who was born in 1794 in Basildon. I am fairly certain he was the third son of James and Elizabeth Mead. He was 12 at the time of the road accident and must have been taken in by a relative and apprenticed to a wheelwright. He married Susanna Bannister in Corringham in 1817 and was a master wheelwright living in Ramsden Crays in 1851. He son George Mead and grandson George John Mead were also wheelwrights. George John Mead was my great grandfather and his son Lionel Glover Mead was an army engineer. My father Lionel John Mead was a surveyor and I am an electrical engineer. I would appreciate receiving any additional relevant information about the Mead family. For example who after the accident took over the running of James and Elizabeth’s Mead farm which was the Fair House Farm.
